OVERVIEW:

The Department of Transfusion Medicine is well equipped with all facilities to fulfill the requirements for Patient care and Post Graduate education. The department consists of a Professor, to Immudohaematology, cellular therapy, A pheresis technology and clinical transfusion services. The Blood Centre which is the mainstay of the Departmental service has the facility for preparing various blood components such as Packed Red Blood Cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma, Platelet concentrates and Cryoprecipitate which are essential for anemia correction and correction of bleeding and clotting disorders respectively. Equipment to prepare and store the mentioned components is present. Voluntary blood donors are thoroughly examined by the Medical Officers, before blood donation and the collection process is performed by adequately trained staff. The collected blood is screened for HIV, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Malaria and Syphilis by automated methods, with latest update dragnet kits, so as to render the blood product absolutely safe for transfusion.. A pheresis procedure is performed to prepare Single Donor Platelets, as well as Stem Cells. Therapeutic Plasma Exchange is also done thereby increasing the department’s patient care capabilities. Stringent well documented Quality Control measures are followed on a daily, weekly and monthly basis to ensure blood product safety. Dedicated Faculty and competent technical staff strive hard to ensure total quality management. There is also a library cum seminar room and research lab for academic activities. Besides, a coagulation analyser for performing various tests for coagulation is also available. Thus the department provides various patient oriented services as well as has an ideal learning and training environment for those doctors who wish to pursue an MD course in Transfusion Medicine considering the need for such specialists in the country.

Introduction:

Blood donation should be a purely voluntary act, by the blood donor.

Why are blood the need of the hour?

  • Every year our nation requires about 5 crore units of blood, out of which only a meagre 2.5 crore units of blood are available.

  • Every two seconds someone needs blood.

  • One unit of life can help save three people’s lives.

We, Department of Transfusion Medicine, Saveetha Medical College Hospital, launched the Blood Donor club “ SAV(E) LIFE” ,  in the year 2019.

The objective is to help people in and around, round the clock for 365 days. We follow the policy of any group anywhere any time. Our student, volunteers willingly donate blood to the needy whenever the situation calls.

The aim of  our Blood Donor club is to  make the students of SIMATS aware  about the importance of Blood donation, during the golden hours and also to mitigate  the myths and hesitancy about the blood donation in the minds of our students. This would promote a sense of internally generated sense of  altruism and community responsibility  among our students. It is important to introduce the subject of blood donation into schools as part of science and civic studies. The young are potential donors.

Life is the most precious and it is an irretrievable one. Our students have always risen to the occasion and have rendered timely help as in the following emergency cases There is no short cuts to effective recruitment programming. The only way to achieve good  results is to approach the task systematically and professionally. The work of our blood donor club in recruiting the student donor  is essentially progressive and active. The challenge is ever present.
