The Department of Psychiatry has been functioning in Saveetha Medical College and Hospital since 2008 and has been effectively rendering the most needed Psychiatric Care to the needy and downtrodden people in the sub urban area and rural area in and around Kancheepuram district. We have a well established Licensed Inpatient Psychiatry Setting with 30 beds for psychiatric illness and 10 beds for deaddiction services exclusively. Weekly bedside grand rounds are conducted on Tuesdays where all faculty, residents and support staff participate in discussing and deciding the ongoing management of the admitted patients.
Our strength lies in full fledged faculty profile of eminent Psychiatrists with varied areas of interest from institutional psychiatry, rehabilitation to child psychiatry. Our Postgraduates and Consultants provide emergency services round the clock to address emergencies like aggressive behaviour, suicidal tendencies and substance withdrawl. We also have Qualified Clinical psychologists, Psychiatric Social Workers and Occupational Therapists.
Training of medical graduates for exposure to Psychiatric Care is being imparted most effectively. Research projects have been encouraged right from Undergraduate period.
At present there are 8 MD Psychiatry postgraduates with 4 admissions per year.
Undergraduate and postgraduate students of various disciplines are trained, and conduct research, under the guidance of the Department.
These include students from the following courses: M.B.B.S, B. Sc (Nursing), M.Sc (Nursing), Msc (Clinical Psychology), BPT, social work students from other institutions and postgraduates from Medicine, Pediatrics and Pharmacology.
SERVICES OFFERED
The Department provides round the clock Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry services to address psychiatric issues in patients who are medically ill and provide prompt opinions on cross-referrals. The Department also caters to the needs of various special populations through specialty clinics and inter-departmental collaborations.
