The Department of Psychiatry has been functioning in Saveetha Medical College and Hospital since 2008 and has been effectively rendering the most needed Psychiatric Care to the needy and downtrodden people in the sub urban area and rural area in and around Kancheepuram district.  Motto of the department aligns with that of the Institution

We have a well established Licensed Inpatient Psychiatry Setting with 30 beds for psychiatric illness and 10 beds for deaddiction services exclusively.  Weekly bedside grand rounds are conducted on Tuesdays where all faculty, residents and support staff participate in discussing and deciding the ongoing management of the admitted patients.

Our strength lies in full fledged faculty profile of eminent Psychiatrists with varied areas of interest from institutional psychiatry, rehabilitation to child psychiatry.  Our Postgraduates and Consultants provide emergency services round the clock to address emergencies like aggressive behaviour, suicidal tendencies and substance withdrawl. We also have Qualified Clinical psychologists, Psychiatric Social Workers and Occupational Therapists.

Training of medical graduates for exposure to Psychiatric Care is being imparted most effectively. Research projects have been encouraged right from Undergraduate period. 

At present there are 8 MD Psychiatry postgraduates with 4 admissions per year.

Undergraduate and postgraduate students of various disciplines are trained, and conduct research, under the guidance of the Department.

These include students from the following courses: M.B.B.S, B. Sc (Nursing), M.Sc (Nursing), Msc (Clinical Psychology), BPT, social work students from other institutions and postgraduates from Medicine, Pediatrics and Pharmacology.

SERVICES OFFERED

The Department provides round the clock Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry services to address psychiatric issues in patients who are medically ill and provide prompt opinions on cross-referrals. The Department also caters to the needs of various special populations through specialty clinics and inter-departmental collaborations.

rTMS

An innovative and recent method of treatment called  Repititive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is offered by the department of psychiatry

Only medical college in Tamilnadu to offer this innovative treatment modality.

Modified ECT – Electroconvulsive therapy

Modified ECT is an effective treatment modality for patients who are resistant to other forms of treatment.

 Stress Management Programs for students

Stress Management Programs have been conducted by the psychiatry department faculty for students of constituent colleges of SIMATS

Screening of the students for psychological issues is also done during the program

School Mental Health Programme

School Mental Health Program in the form of Health Education, Screening and Counselling along with Stress Management for exam going children is rendered by expert panel.

School Mental Health Unit is functioning since 2018.

Objectives of the School Mental Health Program include

a)    Sensitize teachers on identifying children with emotional and behavioural issues

b)    Counsel children with academic, emotional and behavioural issues in the school environment after consent from parents

c)    Awareness sessions for parents and teachers

Total number of students screened and treated in school - 62

Dr Shanthi Nambi, Professor of Psychiatry and Dr Raman K Professor of Psychiatry had been visiting the PUPIL School every Thursday between 11 am and 3 PM .

Principal and Teachers identify children with difficulties and send them for referral. After detailed evaluation by the Psychiatrists, Childs parents are contacted and follow up done
