Overview

Saveetha Neonatology Centre was started in the year 2015 and mainly focuses on providing quality perinatal and neonatal care .Our centre is a state of art facility with 20 level III neonatal intensive care beds and caters to both inborn and out born neonates from the surrounding districts of Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur .We provide preventive, promotive curative and developmentally supportive care to the neonates free of cost .The department comprises of highly experienced ,qualified compassionate faculty and nurses who are well trained and equipped to deliver the best possible care to the neonates admitted in the Neonatal intensive care unit including complex neonatal problems like extreme prematurity ,respiratory distress syndrome, meconium aspiration syndrome ,persistent pulmonary hypertension ,neonatal sepsis and severe neonatal jaundice.

NICU

Our unit offers neonatal interventions like conventional ventilation, Continuous positive airway pressure, high frequency ventilation phototherapy, total parental nutrition, neonatal surgical interventions and critical post operative care.

At the time of birth baby was only 590 grams. She had respiratory distress syndrome (due to surfactant deficiency).

The high technology equipments help maintaining the quality of milk banking.

Facilities

  • Spectrum of Neonatal Interventions

    Our unit offers neonatal interventions like conventional ventilation, Continuous positive airway pressure, high frequency ventilation phototherapy, total parental nutrition, neonatal surgical interventions and critical post operative care.

    We offer 24 hours in house qualified pediatrician to attend all deliveries and to provide resuscitation to the babies in case the need arises.

    Other unique service that we offer is the antenatal counseling to all mothers to prepare them for child birth in the last trimester. All the babies in the postnatal ward are also reviewed daily twice to identify any sickness.

    The babies born in the hospital are examined for major external abnormalities. Before discharge all the neonates undergo visual, hearing and critical congenital heart disease screening.

    We also offer developmental follow up services, immunization services and outpatient services to the neonates and infants on a digital platform.

  • Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddy scheme(MRMBS)

    In Saveetha Medical College Hospital, all babies who are registered under Dr.Muthulakshmi Reddy scheme(MRMBS) are treated free of cost.

    We also provide treatment at a very nominal cost to babies who are registered under our own maternity benefit scheme named as Muthaiammal scheme wherein the patients need to be paying only for the medications, all other treatment including investigations, consultant fee are waivered off.

    These benefits are not only for the babies but the Mothers are also treated free of cost and they are allowed to occupy a postnatal bed for the entire period of hospital stay of the baby

  • Outreach activities

    Apart from excellence in patient care, the Department of Neonatology is also involved in Community activities such as periodic training of ICDS supervisors in Infant and Young Child Feeding and taking up ICDS Nutritional survey of under 5 children from surrounding districts. These children, when found to have health related issues are referred to our hospital and managed free of cost. Our department also heads the Quality Committee as a part NABH accreditation process ensuring quality of care.

  • Research

    In Saveetha Neonatology Centre, we stress importance on research activities. Our department has more than 20 publications to its name.

    Currently we are in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras for providing cost effective follow up service using an affordable technology which is a multicentric RCT of which our institute is also a site.

    We are also part of the study – Mapping of Human Brain in collaboration with IIT Madras.

  • Interesting cases managed

    The smallest baby that we have managed was born at 25 weeks of gestation and 4 days. At the time of birth baby was only 590 grams.

    She had respiratory distress syndrome (due to surfactant deficiency).This required immediate respiratory support  in form of mechanical  ventilation and surfactant administration.

    Nutrition was given intravenously through central access as Total Parentral Nutrition to produce the desired weight gain.

    Simultaneously she was also started on mother’s milk early to facilitate early lactation. The baby also received a developmental supportive, Kangaroo care which helps in temperature maintenance, improving breastfeeding, prevention of infection and brain development of the baby.

    Both the father and the mother were involved in this care. The baby was discharged at 2200 grams.

  • Saveetha Comprehensive Lactation Management Center

    Department of Neonatology inaugurated the Comprehensive lactation Management Centre (CLMC) /Human Milk Bank 0n 27th JANUARY 2020 .

    Funding: The cost of equipments required for establishing the Comprehensive lactation Management Centre was worth 30 lakhs was funded by Rotary international. The high technology equipments help maintaining the quality of milk banking.

    We have qualified trained lactation support staff and technicians to handle the work of breast milk banking

    Saveetha neonatology centre CLMC functions as per the National Guidelines on Establishment of Lactation Management Centers of Government of India. Our Centre will pave way to improve the breast feeding practices of mothers from Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur districts.

    On an average yearly 515 mothers donate breast milk and 110 litres of breast milk is collected and processed. The recipients include preterm babies, sick babies, abandoned babies and post operative babies.
