DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY

Overview

The Department of Pathology was started at the inception of the Medical College and is fully staffed with qualified faculty. The Department is committed to excellence in teaching, diagnostics and meaningful research. Teaching and training are given to undergraduates and postgraduates belonging MBBS, BPT, BOT, BSc Nursing, BSc Allied Health Sciences, MSc MLT, MSc Nursing, MSc Critical care medicine, MD Pathology, MD Dermatology, MD Microbiology and DM Nephrology.

The histopathology section on an average receives approximately 7500 surgical specimens per annum while the cytopathology receives about 6000 specimens per annum which include fine-needle aspiration cytology (including guided FNAC), fluid cytology and exfoliate cytology. The clinical pathology section is located in the central laboratory and functions round the clock. A well-equipped library with a collection of 342 readily accessible books is available at the department.

Facilities

Small Group Interactive Multimedia Classroom with Smart TV

Helps students learn from interaction and encouraged to ask questions.

Equipped with Nanocyt for liquid based cytology and cyto- centrifuge.

Cytology laboratory

For teaching and demonstrating slides for post graduates. Other microscopes include Penta head microscope and 150 binocular self illuminating microscopes for UG students.

Decahead Microscope

Our histopathology lab is well equipped with automated tissue processor, automated stainer, grossing station, semi automated microtome, Tissue embedding station Cryostat, fluorescent microscope and IHC.

Histopathology laboratory

Equipped with 6 Part hematology analyzer ( 2 Nos), HPLC (To detect hemoglobinopathies), Automated ESR analyzer and Semi automated urine strip analyzer. Automated analyzers are linked to Kranium Integrated Hospital Information System.

Hematology and clinical pathology laboratory

Wide collection of 800 mounted interesting pathology specimens are displayed at the department museum.

Both hard and soft copies of the specimen catalogs are available at the museum.

Academics

The faculty are involved in teaching and training the undergraduates (MBBS - 250 seats per year, BPT, BSc Nursing, BSc AHS) and postgraduates (MD/MS, MDS, MSc) of this institution. In service training is provided to MD Pathology postgraduates (intake of 10 postgraduates per year).

Traditional lecture classes for the third and fourth semester MBBS students have been replaced by MILA (Multiple Interactive Learning Algorithm) in the form of small group discussions, wherein the 250 students are divided into 6 groups of 40 students each. The sessions are taken in classrooms equipped with interactive smartboards. A topic will be discussed by the faculty for the first 20 minutes followed by student-centred interactive learning by using the following methods:

  • Small group discussions

  • Concept maps

  • Skill lab ( Clinical simulation)

  • Buzz groups

  • Game based learning

  • Peer-led team learning

  • Clay modelling

  • Case based discussion

  • Mentorship

  • Slow learners – Remedial exam, mentoring sessions, special classes

  • SCALE-UP

  • JIGSAW

  • POGIL

Post graduates have hands on training in all aspects of Pathology and participate in regular academic activities like journal clubs, seminars, case presentations and group discussions. All round assessment is done through Directly Observed Practical Skills and reflective Portfolios. The UG and PG students are also encouraged to publish their research work in indexed journals (Number of publications 180). Regular monthly clinic pathologic conferences are held with all the clinical departments. Guest lectures and slide seminars by National and International subject experts in Pathology are conducted regularly apart from CME programs and workshops.

Research

The department is actively involved in research projects in all the areas of pathology and we have nearly 214 publications in indexed journals. Undergraduate students, Postgraduates and Faculty are actively involved in research work. The undergraduate projects include ICMR funded projects.

Collaborative research project Between the research groups of IIT Madras and Department of Pathology Saveetha Medical College and Hospital (SMCH), Thandalam, Chennai, as part of the project titled “Computational and Experimental Platform for High Resolution Terapixel imaging of ex-vivo Human Brains”, sanctioned by the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser’s to Government of India.

Two of our post graduates are involved in collaborative research projects with Mediscan (Chennai) on Fetal pathology.

Training in Fetal autopsies is also imparted to the post graduates in Pathology department. Some notable abnormalities that have been found so far are Meckel-Gruber syndrome, Potter Syndrome, Congenital Cardiac abnormalities, Arnold Chiari Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Anencephaly, Renal abnormalities , etc.
