Department of Nephrology

Overview

Established in 2015, the Department of Nephrology at Saveetha Medical College has gone from strength to strength since then.

Catering to the needs of Kancheepuram district and beyond, the department has established itself as a Nephrology unit of excellence, providing state of the art renal replacement therapy services.

The dialysis unit does over 1500 dialysis a month, a majority of them under the CM’s Health Insurance Scheme in line with the University mission statement of providing compassionate medical care. Since it started in 2017, over 35 patients have received a kidney transplant at the most affordable rates in the state of Tamil Nadu. The department also does a lot of glomerular diseases work as well as focuses on preventive nephrology. Other treatment modalities like continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, plasmapheresis, hemoperfusion, continuous renal replacement therapy and slow low efficiency dialysis are being done regularly and successfully.

Starting 2017 the Nephrology department has offered 2 DM seats in Nephrology and the first batch of Nephrology post graduates passed out in 2021. The department also provides clinical exposure to both the BSc and MSc students in Dialysis Technology courses run by the Saveetha College of Allied Health Sciences. There is a strong focus on clinical research which allows all students to choose and area of interest to focus on and work towards publication. There have been more than 10 publications in peer reviewed national and international journals so far.
