Department of Anaesthesia

Overview

The Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care Saveetha Medical College Hospital was established in October 2007. From the date of inception to the current status the department has grown rapidly owing to the complexity of the cases seen and technologies available for patient care.


The department now has 18 state of art modular operation theatres spread over 3 floors with all equipments and monitors and audiovisual connectivity to the conference hall (Solai hall). There is a cath lab providing 24 hrs services with a hybrid operation theatre. We have 20 bedded post anaesthesia care unit (PACU) for providing quality services for patients in the immediate postoperative period. We also have full-fledged ICU, IMCU and CCU.


We have 24 consultants and 25 residents to provide anaesthesia care for all specialties apart from core specialties we take care of cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, obstetric gynaecology , spine surgery, paediatric surgery, uro surgery, facio-maxillary surgery, plastic and remonstrative surgery, joint replacement, onco surgery, hepatobillary surgery, bariatric surgery , colorectal surgery and renal transplant surgery.


It is a post graduate Institute with 12 MD Anaesthesia pgs intake every year. The department if full fledged with skilled faculties and professors and excellent academic activities. Currently our department has started a PDCC course in acute pain management with 2 residents every year. We also provide chronic pain relief procedures with RF, TFESI and cooled RF for selected cases.


Our ultimate motto is to provide outstanding patient care and finest education for medical students, residents and AHS students with the team of accomplished faculty and world class infrastructure.

  • The department of anaesthesia received Award of appreciation for their exemplary services during the active phase of  COVID infection  

  • We have been approved center for transplant procedures – Kidney ,Liver and Heart. Renal Transplant surgery is routinely being conducted here from 2018.

  • Department has started a E-News letter titled AWAKE from march 2022 – monthly periodical

  • Department started PDCC course in Regional Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Management from 2019 course period of 1 year.

  • The department offers observership in Acute Pain management of variable duration from 1 week to 1 month

  • The department is selected as a center for conducting National Board Practical Exam.

  • The department conducts a Annual CME and workshop every year in the name of “ SCOPE” around the month of October

  • We are the pioneer in procuring COOL RF machine in South India for managing chronic pain conditions

  • Recently department of anaethesia is also providing its services for Robotic for assisted  surgeries

  • We are also a part of the Smile Train programme- where cleft lip and palate correction is done for small children

  • PDCC – RAAAPM IN ANESTHESIOLOGY - POST DOCTORAL CERTIFICATE COURSE IN REGIONAL ANAESTHESIA AND ACUTE PAIN MANAGEMENT

    INTRODUCTION:

    Regional Anaesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship was started in the year 2019 and progressing for the past 4 years with the selected candidates getting exposed to a Multidisciplinary Pain Program by providing comprehensive pain medicine training.

    The learning objectives encompass training in a variety of areas of pain medicine including acute pain, Post- operative pain, Labor analgesia and cancer pain.

    The candidates will be able to Competently perform all medical and invasive procedures considered essential for managing pain using advanced facilities like Ultra sound, C-Arm, Nerve stimulator etc.

    HIGHLIGHTING FEATURES

    Research in novel therapies and techniques of regional anaesthesia by ultrasound guidance and peripheral neuromodulation.

    Improved enhanced recovery pathways for surgical patients in the acute pain services.

    Our fellows have opportunity to learn the skills in preoperative block room where they learn strategies to optimise patient flow and increase procedural efficiency.

    Postoperative continuous perineural infusions with elastomeric pumps.

    Academic sessions by fellows with one day per week and OR teaching by the patient side.

    Hybrid simulations for practising advanced regional anaesthesia which helps systematic learning for the fellows.

    Multi department clinical rotation to make the program comprehensive.

    DOPS evaluation for formative assessment of the fellow.

    Rotation in pediatric and trauma patients is offers the fellows an additional expertise in the subspecialty.

    On arrival nerve blocks in ER and trauma wards.

    Essential qualification – Candidates must possess, MD/DNB degree in Anesthesiology from an Institution recognized by Medical  Council of India. The candidates will be given a stipend during the course
